Artemis I baan weg vir wetenskaplike mylpale

Die eerste van drie Artemis-maanvuurpyle, Artemis I, is vandag om 8:47.44 vanaf die Kennedy-ruimtesentrum in Florida gelanseer.

Die vuurpyl neem die onbemande ruimtekapsule Orion op ’n ses weke lange toetsvlug om die maan en terug om sowel die vuurpyl as die kapsule te toets voordat ’n bemande missie onderneem sal word.

Orion sal na verwagting kort na Kersfees weer na die aarde terugkeer.

Orion sal met die Artemis I-missie tydens sy omwenteling van die maan ’n punt meer as 278 000 myl (ongeveer 448 000 km) weg van die aarde bereik.

Die langtermyndoelwit van die Artemis-program is om ’n maanbasis tot stand te bring, waarvandaan bemande vlugte na Mars onderneem kan word.
