Grumpy’s fishing report

Some huge swells came rolling in from the ocean this past week. This contributed to some terrific galjoen fishing. The delicious shallow water fish are caught with small size 1 hooks with a variety of baits including white mussel, black mussel and red bait. They are fairly easy to catch as one doesn’t have to cast the line out far. So it’s a fun fish to catch for young and old. The fact that galjoen is a number one eating fish makes it all the more worthwhile. These fish can usually be targeted where one encounters white water, meaning any place where the waves are rolling towards the shore. Anglers call this the white water. The kob were a bit tougher to catch this past week. Garreth Woolfaardt fished at Diepsloep and he got stuck into a huge kob. Diepsloep is a very popular angling spot just to the north of Mile 8’s parking area. About 500m. After his fight with this beauty they took a quick photo and the fish was released to fight another day. Great catch for sure. The shark anglers also tried their luck. Werner van Riet (also champion angler for the nationals of 2022) targeted the strong spotted gulley sharks in the Mile 12 area and landed a huge beast. He used mullet as bait. They also use fixed spool (also known as coffee grinders) with braided line and a 15ft rod. This set up makes casting the bait much further possible compared to the conventional multiplier reels. The eagle rays are still about and are great fighters which really put your tackle to the test. Kehandro Olivier caught his eagle ray just north of Mile 108 on pilchards. He also used his new grinder setup. The ski boats haven’t had so much luck as the swell made it difficult for them to head out. The conditions however have definitely changed and they will most probably get some good fish this week. Fishing conditions look promising and anglers might get good fish this upcoming weekend. Full moon should also bring about some more activity from the fish. Tight lines!
