NSSU to host 685 athletes
An athletic showdown
The yearly Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) athletics is scheduled to take place this weekend, 28 and 29 April at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.
About 685 athletes are expected to compete.
According to NSSU sport coordinator Roger Kambatuku, the event is the biggest on the NSSU sports calendar and is considered the Olympics of school gatherings.
This year, the total budget for the gathering is reported to be at N$700 000, of which Standard Bank sponsored N$30 000 and Coca Cola sponsored N$40 000. The remainder of the money is subsidised by the ministry of sport, youth and national service, he said.
One of the challenges experienced in organising the event is inequality throughout the regions due to lack of infrastructure, Kambatuku said.
“The conditions and environments the athletes train in are different,” he said, adding that in Swakopmund athletes practice on a tartan track and in the Zambezi Region, athletes are not equipped with the right infrastructure to practice on. "Either way, good results are expected this weekend as this is the biggest gathering of athletes in the country."
Athletics Namibia said it looks forward to see the juniors in action at the gathering.
“We expect competition of high standard," public relations officer Edward Kapewasha said.
The two organisations are in close partnership as Athletics Namibia assists with the technical equipment needed at the competition as well as training for the officials. The organisation is the national code federation and oversees all athletic-related events.
The NSSU athletics remain important for junior athletes to showcase their talents at the competition.
“It is vital because because the NSSU event serves as a qualifier for continental and international competitions,” Kapewasha said.
