'Christmas in July': A tribute to 40 years of Ikhoba artistry
The 12th edition of the 'Christmas In July' exhibition - curated by Mildred von Frankenberg-Lüttwitz - opened at the Namibia Craft Centre on Wednesday, 19 July, and will run until 31 August.
“I am thrilled to showcase the rich tapestry of Namibian Christmas traditions and welcome both tourists and locals alike," Von Frankenberg-Lüttwitz said.
This year's exhibition features an array of talented artists, with a special focus on the Ikhoba artists - a dynamic embroidery group with skilled bead artists.
The embroidery artisans have crafted stunning tablecloths, cushion covers and bed linen, while the bead artists have brought to life exquisite trophy heads and mesmerising Christmas decorations. Additionally, local artists have contributed delightful wooden figurines to the showcase, while some unique products have been sourced all the way from Kenya.
This year's theme, 'Best of 40 Years', marks a significant milestone for the Ikhoba project, which traces its roots back four decades.
“The project, initiated by my mother and her sisters, was born on a humble farm to empower women with an opportunity for income generation through their creative talents. Today, it has blossomed into an awe-inspiring endeavour that has become an integral part of our cultural heritage,” the curator said.
The exhibition serves not only as a celebration of creativity and craftsmanship, but also as an avenue to foster cultural exchange and appreciation. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore and purchase traditional Namibian Christmas gifts, suitable for both the discerning tourist and the enthusiastic local shopper.
