Swakopmund Senior Open signals revival

The tournament returned to the local tennis calendar from 18 to 21 December at the newly revamped Swakopmund Tennis Club

The recent Swakopmund Senior Open held at the Swakopmund Tennis Club had with a few more entries than in 2024, as 44 players entered to compete over all categories – Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles. An undisputed highlight was the men’s quarter-final between Daniel Jauss and Ruben Yssel. After a battle of 3 hours 11 minutes, the eventual champion Ruben walked away with a 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 comeback win. Main results: Women's Singles final: Riekie Gordon beat Lisa Yssel 6-4, 6-4. Third playoff: Larushka Kruger beat Imelda Franciscus 6-1, 6-2. Men's Singles final: Ruben Yssel beat Michau Basson 6-4, 4-2 (retired). Third playoff: Borja Romero beat Stephan Koen 6-1, 6-0. Women's Doubles final: Larushka Kruger/Elrica Nakusera beat Riekie Gordon/Mariska Kuschke by walkover. Third: Natalia Ouses/Caroline Adriano. Men's Doubles final: Ruben Yssel/Daniel Jauss beat Michau Basson/Theo Jauss by walkover. Third: SP van Wyk/Stephan Koen. Mixed Doubles final: Riekie Gordon/Michau Basson beat Lisa Yssel/Ruben Yssel 6-0, 6-2. The Swakopmund Tennis Open has long been a valued fixture on the local sporting calendar. As an avid tennis player himself, Michau Basson was unwilling to see the tournament fade away, and with his wife Caricia remain determined to see it restored to its former glory. Their vision is to once again offer world-class tennis in Swakopmund, creating an event of a standard that would attract players from across the SADC region and beyond. “Through our respective businesses, Professional Private Wealth Management and Caricia Basson Legal Practitioners, we decided to provide the financial backing and practical support required to sustain a tournament of this calibre. “We chose to support the Swakopmund Tennis Open as a couple because it reflects values that matter deeply to us: commitment, perseverance, and community. “We need to continue investing in our youth.
