Zambia reach women’s final, South Africa through in men’s competition

Brian Munango
Zambia have powered their way into the final of the COSAFA U20 Women’s Championship with a commanding 5-0 victory over Botswana in the first semifinal at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Friday.

A brace from #10 Bwalya Namute Chileshe (3’, 35’), along with goals from #9 Ruth Mukoma (43’), #20 Saliya Mwanza (48’) and #3 Ruth Muwowo (90+1’), saw the Young Copper Queens dominate from start to finish. The result confirms Zambia’s place in Sunday’s final as they chase the regional crown.

In the men’s competition, South Africa sealed their spot in the final with a confident 2-0 win over Angola. Steven Mendes opened the scoring in the first half, before Thandanani Mhlongo added a second after the break to guide the defending champions into the title match.

The second women’s semifinal between hosts Namibia and South Africa was scheduled for later on Friday, as was the remaining men’s semifinal clash between Zambia and Malawi.

Both finals are set for Sunday, with the Hage Geingob and UNAM stadiums hosting the conclusion of the youth football competition at the Region 5 Games.

All matches are streamed live on COSAFA’s YouTube channel, with global access via FIFA+ (excluding the countries of the participating teams). Full match replays are available 30 minutes after the final whistle.
