Wrestlers' bronze open medal count in Algeria
African School Games
The continental multi-sport games in Algeria will see a number of Namibians in action this week.
Algeria is hosting the first Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) African School Games from 26 July to 5 August 2025 in the cities of Constantine, Annaba, Sétif and Skikda, with the participation of 3 018 young athletes and coaches from 51 member countries.
Namibia’s first two medals of the Games were won on Sunday by Greco-Roman wrestlers Shithigona Shipopyeni (55 kg weight class) and Petrus Haibodi in the 60 kg weight class.
The wrestling team of three is accompanied by coach Alexandro Haininga and team manager Francois Durand.
• The Namibian junior equestrian teams arrived in Constantine to represent their country for the first time in three disciplines. The teams will compete in endurance riding, dressage and show jumping.
In the endurance ride (80 km, on Saturday), Namibia will be represented by Elani Potgieter and Elbé Potgieter, accompanied by Joey Potgieter as team manager.
Namibian dressage (31 July to 2 August) and show jumping (2 August) will be represented by Alyssa Hopking, Arinda Duvenhage, Emily le Roux and Louis Kotze. They are accompanied by Vanessa Glowania as team manager.
• The Namibian Cycling Federation’s junior team arrived in Algeria on Sunday morning.
Rosemarie Thiel, Marco Thiel, Sean Lowe and Christian van der Westhuizen are accompanied by coach Carolin Janik.
The road cycling races will start on Tuesday afternoon with the individual time trials (boys and girls). The team time trial will follow on Thursday afternoon, before the girls’ road race on Friday morning and the boys’ road race on Saturday morning.
• The Namibia National Olympic Committee’s team in Algeria is represented in: athletics / boxing / road cycling / equestrian / gymnastics / swimming / wrestling.
