Weakley, Scott dominate Danie Joubert shoot

Windhoek High School’s (WHS) Burton Weakley and Taylieschen Scott were crowned champions of the recently concluded annual Danie Joubert Combined School Archery Day in Mariental.The African Genesis Archery (AGA) event attracted 110 archers from various schools and clubs nationwide.It featured senior and junior archers competing in bull’s eye and animal rounds, with a maximum combined score of 900, as they battled it out for crucial ranking points that count towards national team selection.Weakley dominated the senior boys section with a score of 873, ahead of runner-up Ru-Wayne Bezuidenhout of Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool (WAP) with 864 and second runner-up Fedaliz Basson of Community Hope School with 854.In the senior girls, Scott reigned supreme with a score of 831, ahead of runner-up Anielka Hayward of hosts Danie Joubert on 830 and Jorine Krugel of Roots Gymnasium on 827.Junior winnersThe junior section also witnessed up-and-coming archers display outstanding marksmanship, with Ben Rothkegel of Central Archery Club leading the boys section with a score of 812.Closely following was Albert Redelinghuys (Berg-Op Academy) in second place with 806 and third-placed Meyer Engelbrecht (Roots Gymnasium) with 765.In junior girls, Zeanette Jacobs (WHS) dominated with 806, ahead of Jeandrie van der Merwe (WAP) in second place on 786 and Unondiero Tjijenda (Community Hope School) on 777.AAG winnersNon-school-going archers competed in the Adult Archery Group (AAG) category, shooting both bull’s eye and 3D rounds with a maximum score of 900.Marionette de Waal was the outstanding archer in the women’s section with a score of 864, ahead of Alida Bezuidenhout with 812 and Dominique Bekker with 804.Meanwhile, in the men’s section, Paul van der Merwe reigned supreme with 828, followed by Willie Krugel in second place with 823 and Nomin Lucas in third place with 810.CamaraderieAs the event organiser, Nomin Lucas highlighted that the day was aimed at promoting friendly competition and camaraderie.“We began with a warm welcome by Danie Joubert’s school principal, Deon Cloete, who set the tone for the day with the motto for the event: focus, be competitive and be proud,” he said.Lucas added that the motto was reflected in the performance of archers like Marionette de Waal, who shot seven fifties in the AAG category.“It was a truly remarkable achievement. Not to forget our cub Louw Rosseau, who set a record score of 135 in the cub category.
