Undefeated Stars, Phoenix to face off in KBA final
Basketball
Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) women’s premier league semi-final playoffs were cut short on Tuesday after dominant Ongos Shooting Stars stormed to a 20-0 victory over Atlantic Storms.
Held at University of Namibia (Unam) Gym Hall, the series was played in a best-of-five format.
The two teams also met in the semi-final series last season, where Storms came out on top.
The scales, however, toppled this time around, as since its tip-off on 26 August, Ongos Shooting Stars pulled off a clean sweep of their three matches over Atlantic Storms (86-57, 68-52, 20-0), rendering the remaining two games unnecessary and securing their place in the final.
Women’s premier league final
Stars will now face off against Unam Phoenix in the final, who also swept their semi-final playoffs 3-0 over BAS Falcons.
Speaking to this publication yesterday, Stars player Vilencia “Vivi” Binga acknowledged her team’s improvement this season and the journey ahead, calling it “a very competitive best-of-seven series.”
She said the team is buckling up and looks forward to giving their fans a good showing.
“We will try to win as much of the series as we can, because mind you, Phoenix beat us home and away this season by exactly 31 points in both games. We are looking to minimise the margin and be the first to win the four games for the championship.”
Phoenix and Falcons’ semi-final campaign also began on 26 August and concluded last Saturday. It was another one-sided series that ended after three games, with Phoenix dominating 92-38, 103-31 and 101-26.
Reflecting on the season’s final showing, Phoenix captain Anna Iimene acknowledged the team’s three consecutive championship titles and assured they are not easing up just yet.
“Ongos probably want it more than we do because we won it last year and would be coming with more intensity, but we have the same intensity and much more speed,” she said.
“The team is continuously putting in the work. Last season, we had to work two times harder for the title. This season, we will work three times harder and step up the intensity.”
Both teams now have over a week to prepare for the playoff series scheduled to tip off on 20 September at Unam Gym Hall.
Men’s premier league playoffs heat up
The men’s premier league semi-finals are headed towards their closing stages, with Quality Basketball leading Afro Stars 3-2 in their best-of-seven series.
The second semi-final series sees Unam Wolves holding a 3-2 advantage over Unam Rebels.
Both teams will play their sixth game in the series tomorrow at Unam Gym Hall, with Quality versus Stars beginning the day at 19:00, followed by the Unam derby of Rebels and Wolves at 20:30.
A win from either Wolves or Quality will see them book their place in the final.
Division finals
In the first division, Unam Penguins are in the final against Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) Gladiators for a chance at premier league basketball. Their best-of-seven game series also begins on 20 September.
Meanwhile, the second division also sees Team Allies and Leopards battle it out in a best-of-five series for first division promotion next Saturday.
