The Standard Bank Top 8 Cup is now wide open following the early exit of two of the tournament’s favourites, Eeshoke Chula Chula and African Stars FC.In a surprising turn of events, both sides failed to advance to the semi-finals, opening the door for the remaining teams in the competition.African Stars suffered a shock defeat to Eleven Arrows, losing 4–2 on penalties over the long weekend after the match ended in a goalless draw.Stars coach Agnus Elemu attributed the loss partly to poor pitch conditions.“We are disappointed with the result, and it is very sad that we are not able to complete the double this season,” he said.“The pitch did not make it any easier for us, as it was in appalling condition. The team will go back to the drawing board and prepare for the future, as we have a big season ahead.”Ongos FC, meanwhile, secured their place in the semi-finals in what marked a form of redemption after finishing fourth in the recently concluded Premier League season.Ronnie Kanalelo’s side edged King Kauluma Palace 1–0, thanks to a decisive strike from Simon Elago.Kanalelo praised his team’s effort.“We are happy with the result. It could have been more, but the most important thing was getting through under these conditions.“We are hoping to go all the way, even though we know it will not be easy.”King Kauluma Palace coach Sakaria Kambonde expressed disappointment at his side’s exit.“We are disappointed, but that is football and we have to move on,” he said.“As a club, we have plenty to look forward to next season, and failing to advance should not be seen as the end of the world.“We are disappointed, of course, but that will not stop us from trying again next season.”Unam FC also progressed after defeating coastal side Blue Waters on penalties. The teams drew 1–1 before Unam triumphed 5–4 in the shootout.Coach Robert Nauseb was pleased with his team’s resilience.“This is good for the players and the football club in general. I am proud that the players showed resilience and were able to weather the storm in this important clash.“We are now looking forward to the next round of the competition.”Mighty Gunners also caused an upset by eliminating Premier League runners-up Eeshoke Chula Chula FC.Deon Gariseb scored the only goal of the match to seal the victory.Chula Chula coach John Sikerete admitted his disappointment.“Not such a good result for us, but that is what cup games are about.“There are no second chances in a cup competition, and we should have taken our chances.”About the cupStandard Bank Namibia has confirmed a total sponsorship of N$2.5 million, underlining its commitment to football development in the country.The tournament winners will receive N$600,000, while the runners-up will take home N$300,000. Losing semi-finalists will each earn N$100,000, and all participating teams will receive a N$50,000 preparation grant.Individual awards will also be presented, including Player of the Match for each game, as well as Player of the Tournament, Top Goalscorer and Best Goalkeeper.
