Teenagers to the fore in 4th Grand Prix

National record holder Coenraad Kühn could not match his previous best distance, despite easily winning the men’s shot put at last Saturday’s fourth Grand Prix of the year, presented at Swakopmund’s Vineta Stadium by Athletics Namibia.The 22-year-old Kühn’s nearest rival was the local schoolboy L’Wyk Viljoen (16) of Athletics Development Club (ADC), who reached 11.23 metres. Kühn improved his national record to 18.09 during the first Grand Prix in late January at Swakopmund, but on Saturday he delivered a best of 17.50.Paralympic athlete Lize Meyer (16 years old), who was born without a right hand, used her left hand to win the women’s shot put in 9.52 metres. She also won the discus throw with a best of 28.54m.Top sprintersTjimatjitua Kuhanga (Namibia Correctional Services) won the men’s 400 metres in 47.66 seconds, beating Ezra Nakale (QSB; 47.89) and Magano Naseb (Oceans; 49.26).Elton Hoeseb (QSB) had earlier dominated the 100 and 200 metres, taking the gold medals in times of 10.77 and 21.89.
