Taekwondo federation seeks new talent and expertise

Namibia Taekwondo Federation president Kavezemburuka Veii-Mujoro has urged local coaches, experts and athletes to join the federation and help grow the sport while creating pathways for international representation.

He made the appeal yesterday in Windhoek during a handover event where First National Bank (FNB) Namibia donated three laptops and chargers to support the federation’s administration and office operations.

Speaking at the event, Veii-Mujoro said the federation currently lacks sufficient human resources for full grassroots development and is seeking external support.

“We are primarily seeking black belt holders who have trained in Korea or other countries. We need these individuals, who may be sitting at home with their belts, to come and help grow the sport,” he said.

He also urged those from outside Windhoek to form their own clubs and seek affiliation with the World Taekwondo-recognised federation.

“Taekwondo is alive. We want athletes we can send to competitions abroad and coaches to train them. This is a martial art of discipline and self-defence.”

Recent international success

The federation’s recent international competitions saw Namibia secure a bronze medal at the Zone Six African Taekwondo Open Series in Mozambique through Eswatini-based athlete Seth Mabuza earlier this month.

It is now seeking funds to send one of its top athletes, Owen Samunzala, to the Wuxi World Taekwondo Championships in China from 24 to 30 October.

“We are thankful to the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) for sponsoring the Mozambique trip. We now need help with the upcoming China championships, where we aim to bring home medals once again.

“We are appealing to the community and corporate Namibia to support this trip. We want to prepare these athletes to represent us at the African Games and ultimately the Olympics,” he said.

Happy to help

Representing FNB Namibia, the bank’s central cluster regional commercial manager, Jeffrey Katjivena, said they were proud to support the federation’s initiatives.

“This is in keeping with our social corporate responsibility to support sports in the country, particularly this emerging sport, taekwondo,” he said.

The federation was founded and recognised by the Namibia Sports Commission in 2022 and gained official recognition from World Taekwondo in 2023.
