Street Sports launches community programme

A newly launched community sports initiative is providing regular football and netball activities for young people in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Ondangwa.Street Sports Namibia, organised by Unmatched Potential, centres on weekly community sporting activities aimed at making organised sport more accessible while creating opportunities for young people to compete and develop their abilities.The initiative is supported by the Old Mutual Foundation, which has invested N$900 000 towards the programme.Participating teams are being provided with sporting infrastructure, equipment and playing bibs as part of the rollout across the three towns.Organisers said the support is intended to help establish and sustain regular grassroots sporting activities in the participating communities.Connecting young peopleUnmatched Potential is also using Street Sports Namibia to connect participants with opportunities beyond sport through its Be Your Own Boss programme.The programme focuses on entrepreneurship and self-development, while helping young people explore ways of turning their talents and skills into economic opportunities.Organisers said many talented young Namibians struggle to access suitable sporting facilities, equipment, organised competition and networks that could assist their development.“Sport brings people together. Once they are together, other opportunities can follow,” they said.The weekly activities take place on Sundays from noon, providing a structured environment where participants can interact with coaches, peers, entrepreneurs and potential mentors.A sense of belongingAccording to the organisers, the programme is also intended to create a sense of belonging and help participants develop skills beyond the playing field.They believe bringing organised football and netball closer to communities could help address some of the barriers preventing young people from participating in sport.The programme also gives players an opportunity to compete regularly, showcase their abilities and make connections that could contribute to their sporting development.With activities now operating across three towns, organisers said the aim is to make grassroots sport a more consistent part of community life.– desmarius@nma.com.na
