Defending champions African Stars began the new premiership season with a victory over Khomas Nampol on Sunday, signaling early intentions of defending their title.
Lawrence Doeseb’s 48 minute goal was enough to secure three points for the champions in a late weekend fixture.
The team went into halftime in search of an opening goal, creating chances but the Nampol team stood firm.
Nampol themselves also had a fair chair of the possession but their efforts were met with great defensive display from the Stars back-line.
It was however Stars who had the final say on the match with Doeseb opening his goal account for the season.
Team manager Andrew Tjahikika was pleased with the result and expects the team to continue collecting points.
“It is always important to win your first match in order to get the confidence and encouragement for the season.
“We know that this was the first match and we have an entire season ahead of us but we are proud of the boys for getting three points against a team that finished strongly last season.
“Our intentions remain clear because we want to defend the title and return to the Caf champions League,” said Tjahikika.
Stars won the Namibia Debmarine Premiership with 58 points in a season Young African finished second.
Khomas Nampol who played against Stars on Sunday finished last season in third with 51 points.
Their coach Fortune Eichab expressed disappointment not to have beaten Stars in their opening match on Sunday.
He, however, said that he has done assessments on where they will need to improve this season.
“It is good that football has finally started and we have a clear picture on what to asses.
“I think the game against Stars was not a one way traffic because both goalkeepers were forced to make critical saves in the match.
“We now know where we need to improve as a team and where our strongest points are.
“The goal was caused by a defensive error and we are surely going to fix the mistakes,” Eichab said.
Bucks draw at Okahandja
Bucks Buccaneers on the other hand traveled to Okahandja were they battled Okahandja United FC.
Their coach Ronnie Kanalelo said returning with a point away from home was a satisfactory result even if they could have done better.
Denzel Narib scored Bucks Buccaneers goal, while Ricardo Isaaks was target for the home team.
“I think going to Okahandja and getting a point is not that bad this early on in the season.
“I can say that the players fought and we just have to continue trying to become a better team.
“There is plenty of football to be played this season and we want to be competitive in terms of challenging the bigger teams,” Kanalelo said.
Meanwhile in Otjiwarongo, Mighty Gunners and Life Fighters clashed on Sunday in a derby.
It was a return of Life Fighters to the league after they were relegated a season ago.
Their return was however met with a baptism of fire as Mighty Gunners scored two past their town rivals.
The goals were scored by David Jenson and Given Mutuezu to give the men in uniform a perfect start towards the season.
