Beach volleyball
Afrocat Beach Volleyball League is heating up with plenty of action as it heads into its final half, with Matheus Mupupa and Festus Shatiwa becoming the new log leaders of the two-a-side men’s open on Wednesday.
They overthrew the pair of Daniel Weyulu and Immanuel Hafenanye (33 points) after a 2-0 victory over Rivaldo Uirab and Tobias Johannes at A. Shipena Secondary School, moving into first place on 34 points.
In third position are Tomas Shilumbu and Vatilifa Winesome on 25 points.
Other Wednesday fixtures saw Uirab and Johannes secure a consolation win as they put straight sets (2-0) past Phillips Naboth and Japhet Shimpulu, who later fell by the same scoreline to Tumeritino Lebereki and Joseph Shinyengu.
Women’s section
The women’s section action last unfolded last weekend and currently sees Rauna Shitalangaho and Alushe Sakeus as log leaders on 12 points.
Close in second place are Hilde Mushimba and Rebekka Kandundu (11), with Ruth Kangunga and Sylvia Shiimi in third on 7 points.
Two-a-side mixed
The two-a-side social mixed section featured a single match on Wednesday, where Rivaldo Uirab and Meameno Heita recorded a narrow 2-1 victory over Tumeritino Lebereki to move level on 17 points with leaders Shinedima Emilia and Immanuel Haneyane.
In third place are Tomas Shilumbu and Beatrix Karongee on 12 points.
Making volleyball accessible
The tournament’s organiser Aloisius Ishitile said the event is Afrocat’s way of extending its development footprint to reach passionate volleyball players, coaches and teachers in rural areas, villages and towns across the country.
“Our mission is to make volleyball accessible to every young person who dreams to play, while promoting inclusivity and unity through sports, particularly through our unified volleyball programmes,” he said.
For next year, they are working on forming regional volleyball programmes across various towns in the country, including Okahandja, Grootfontein, Otjiwarongo, Rundu, Ongwediva and Outapi.
