Record 198 turnout at AGA world qualifiers

African Genesis Archery (AGA) Namibia’s Windhoek High School shoot, which served as a final qualifier for the World Tournament the country will host in July in Walvis Bay, saw a record turnout of 198 archers at Wanderers Sports Grounds last weekend.The tournament saw senior, junior and adult archers from various schools nationwide gather to showcase their accuracy skills in the bull’s eye, 3D and animal round disciplines for a chance at national team selection.The senior and junior boys’ and girls’ results will be added together to decide who reaches the top 16 and makes the national team.There will also be 16 archers selected from the adult archery group (AAG), along with a development team that will be selected from the bottom 16 on the national team list.The top three winners from the final qualifiers in the bull’s eye and animal rounds of a 1200 maximum score were:Senior girls:1 Taylieschen Scott from Windhoek High School (1127), 2 Jani de Beer from Windhoek Afrikaanse Private School (WAP) (1115), 3 Petro Mostert from Berg-Op Academy (1110).Senior boys:1 Burton Weakley from Windhoek High School (1151), 2 Ru-Wayne Bezuidenhout from WAP (1144), 3 Ashton Ntsamba from Community Hope School (1124).Junior girls:1 Amelia von Wielligh from Berg-Op Academy (1075), 2 Ariadne van Wyk from St. Paul’s College (1040), 3 Avihe Herunga from Danie Joubert Combined School (1011).Junior boys:1 Willem van der Merwe from WAP (who equalled his highest score of 1151), 2 Luka Janse van Vuuren from Moria Private School (1124), 3 Berend Blom from Moria Private School (1090).The AAG top three winners who shot in the bull’s eye and 3D rounds were:Ladies:1 Marionette de Waal (838), 2 Charne Coetzee (832), 3 Ronelle Raes (827).Men:1 Paul van der Merwe (836), 2 Berend Blom (834), 3 Johan Raes (822).The cubs top three winners were:Boys:1 Louw Rousseau from WAP (improved his high score of 127 to 131), 2 Karl Compaan from Moria, 3 Hanro Raes from Moria.Girls:1 Jonel-Mari Roberts from Moria, 2 Talia Thatcher from Central Elite Archery Club, 3 Hope Bahun from Central Elite Archery Club.Speaking to this publication, AGA Namibia president Poenie Weakley said they are expecting around 300 participants from Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana for the World Tournament.“Namibia will have a total of 48 archers at the World Tournament. We are now finalising the scores using our ranking system, which should produce the list of archers sometime this week. We will ensure gender balance, with each gender expected to have at least six archers in the national team, the development team and the AAG division,” Weakley said.He added that he is very satisfied with the level of competition presented by archers at the final world qualifying event.AGA Namibia is currently in need of sponsors for the World Tournament.- mariud@nsh.com.na
