Clash of the champions
Quiver clinched the Coastal Stream and booked their spot by collecting 28 points from 10 matches (with nine wins and one draw). The Quiver attack was deadly, hitting the target and finding the back of the net 28 times.
Youngsters FC followed in the second position with 17 points.
Stephen Matjayi, the Quiver FC chairman, said: “It is our first time to qualify for the play-offs. We are overwhelmed, but we remain focused. We still have one game to go and it will not be done for us until it’s over.”
Matjayi added that the players in his squad have the ability to go out and win.
“The team is injury-free and we do not have any suspensions in our midst. We do not see the play-offs as just another achievement or a stepping stone because we are working towards a bigger goal.”
The Quiver squad stepped up their preparation for the match against Forever Thistles with intense twice-daily training sessions. Matjayi said: “The players are focused. This is a moment where mental preparation and resilience are of utmost importance. Thistles should know that we are coming to play and to win. We do not under-estimate nor fear them. The best team will win.”
Forty-one years later
Forever Thistles raked in 20 points from six wins, three draws and one defeat to secure their spot at the top of the Inland Stream.
The Thistles' strike force scored 19 goals and conceded eight goals. Spiders FC followed in second position with 18 points.
Cecil Jaars, the Forever Thistles FC coach, said: “It is the first time in 41 years that we have reached this stage. The players know what is at stake and I know they can deliver. Teamwork, discipline and support carried us through. We are going into this clash as the underdogs.”
According to Jaars, his team will enter the fray without three of his trusted stalwarts. “We have been hit by injuries. Sylvanus Swartbooi (midfielder), Michael Swartz (midfielder) and Bonifatius Claasen (striker) are all unavailable for this all-important clash.”
Jaars said his squad knows what to expect from Quiver. “We played them before. They are very fit and physically strong. The plan is to play a passing game against them. I want my players to go out and play the style they are used to and do what they have been doing throughout the season.”
