With three rounds to go in the MTC Volleyball National League (VNL), organisers are already on their toes preparing for the sixth round, which will take place in Ondangwa from 30 to 31 August.

Speaking to this publication yesterday, league coordinator Albert Khevare said preparations are well underway as the league approaches its final stages.

“Everything is up and running. We are progressing well in terms of the execution of fixtures, so come month-end, we will be ready for Ondangwa,” he said.

He added that the fifth round held in Rundu last weekend featured very competitive matches.

“The highlight is the fact that the VNL defending champions in the men’s section, Namibian Correctional Service, won their sole fixture to maintain their lead at the top of the log.

“We have also witnessed high-quality competition as other teams fought for every point across the men’s and women’s sections. Heading into round six, we are indeed expecting more fireworks,” he assured.

Still unbeaten

Namibian Correctional Service took on Calvary Eagles, which, despite taking a set from the league leaders, suffered a 3-1 loss. Namibian Correctional Service now lead the league on 27 points.

Hot on their heels in second place is Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Raptors, who were also drawn with Calvary Eagles and beat them 3-0 to keep their position. They now hold second place on 23 points.

Other encounters saw third-placed Nampol also retain their position after a 3-0 win over Mighty Gunners, who later shared points with Keetmanshoop Correctional Facility after a tense battle that ended 3-2 in Gunners’ favour.

The University of Namibia (Unam) Hard Hitters versus Afrocat C encounter saw Hard Hitters dominate 3-0.

Revivals dominate

The women’s section also featured equally thrilling action, with Revivals retaining their league-leading status despite not playing in round five. Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Phoenixes used the fifth round to play catch-up by winning both fixtures with maximum points.

They first faced Nampol Otjozondjupa and won in straight sets (3-0), before conceding a set in their final fixture against Six Stars, but held their own to claim a 3-1 victory and draw level on 23 points with Revivals.

Despite both teams now sitting on 23 points, tiebreakers are the difference, with unbeaten Revivals remaining league leaders courtesy of their commanding 6.00 set ratio compared to Phoenixes’ 2.50.

Revivals, who last played in the fourth round in Windhoek, have two games in hand. A win in the sixth round in Ondangwa will see them pull ahead outright without relying on tiebreak calculations.

Three-team deadlock

Claiming third place on the standings is Nampol, who maximised points from their two fixtures to reach 20, after beating Nampol Otjozondjupa 3-0 and Unam Queens 3-1.

In round four, Nampol was placed fourth below Kudos in a 14-point tie that saw teams in positions three to five separated only by tiebreakers.

Unam Queens, who were fifth in that tie, now move into fourth courtesy of an earlier 3-0 win over Ball Busters.

Kudos, who had no fixture in the round, drop to fifth with two games in hand and will only be able to mount a comeback in Ondangwa.

The Six Stars versus Ball Busters encounter saw Stars claim a 3-1 victory.
