Oshana Open sets chess participation record

The ninth leg of the 2026 Bank Windhoek Grand Prix Series marked a milestone for Namibian chess as the Oshana Open attracted a record 89 players to the Oshana Gymnasium in Ongwediva on Saturday.

The turnout makes the Oshana Open the largest Bank Windhoek Grand Prix event to date, surpassing previous participation figures recorded in Swakopmund, Keetmanshoop and Walvis Bay.

The record attendance reflects the growing popularity of chess across the country, particularly in northern Namibia, where the sport continues to gain momentum among young players. The tournament brought together experienced national contenders and emerging regional talent across the Open, Women's, Junior and Cadet sections, creating a highly competitive atmosphere throughout the day.

In the Open section, Evans Chitula claimed first place ahead of Fillipus Endjala in second and Fame Thindimba in third.

Mariska Greyling won the Women's section, finishing ahead of Lavinia Shikongo and Joy Nghishongwa. Fabner Naboth claimed the Junior title, followed by Johannes Shikodhi and Moses Ngesheya, while Erick Festus won the Cadet section ahead of Ian Chembe and Angelo Haihambo. Jakobus Greyling was recognised as the Best Local Player, highlighting the depth of talent in the Oshana Region.

The success of the Oshana Open further reinforces the importance of sustained investment in chess development, particularly at grassroots and regional level. Through its continued sponsorship of the Grand Prix Series, Bank Windhoek is helping expand access to structured competition, create opportunities for young players and support the development of strategic thinking, discipline and resilience.

Namibia Chess Federation Secretary General Israel Shilongo said the record turnout reflected the sport's growing national footprint. "We are grateful to Bank Windhoek for helping us take the sport to more communities and create platforms where talent can be discovered and nurtured," he said.

Shilongo also thanked Oshana Gymnasium for hosting the event and Benjamin Chikede, chairperson of the Oshana Regional Chess Association, for coordinating the tournament. He further expressed appreciation to the arbiters, coaches, parents and volunteers whose support contributed to the smooth running of the event.
