The Namibia Football Association (NFA) yesterday announced the appointment of Lesley "Luckey" Kakuva as the new head coach of the senior women\'s national team, the Brave Gladiators.

In a statement yesterday, the association revealed that Kakuva will be replacing Woody Jacobs, who resigned as head coach in April.

The former Orlando Pirates coach is now tasked with preparing the Brave Gladiators for the crucial Women\'s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) second round qualifiers.

The Brave Gladiators are pitted against African powerhouse Zambia in October in an important qualifiers.

NFA interim secretary-general Cassius Moetie expressed confidence in the appointment of Kakuva.

He said the NFA has trust in the experience and football education of the new man in charge.

“We are confident that Luckey’s experience and deep understanding of Namibian football will be invaluable to the Brave Gladiators as they prepare for this important challenge,” Moetie said in a statement.

He believes Kakuva will be able to get the team to gel in an important period of the Brave Gladiators football season.

"He has a proven track record of nurturing talent and getting the best out of his players, and we believe he is the right person to lead the team to success against a formidable opponent like Zambia,” Moeti added.

Vast experience

The new coach is no stranger to football after having coached several Namibia Premier League teams, most notably former league giants Orlando Pirates.

In 2024, Kakuva was named coach of the year after helping the SKW under-19 team to a second-place finish in the MTC HopSol Youth League.

About three months ago, Kakuva was also at the helm of SKW’s team that won the Bank Windhoek Ramblers U21 tournament.

He holds a CAF A-diploma and is widely respected for his tactical acumen and dedication to developing young talent.

The Brave Gladiators, who advanced to the second round after a convincing 4-0 aggregate victory over Eswatini, face a tough two-legged tie against Zambia.

The NFA will announce the rest of the Brave Gladiators\' technical team later this week.
