Netball teams put up strong performances

Although team Swakop clinched both of its final-round matches, they are still head-to-head with Walvis Bay's Eleven Arrows in third place in the league.
Team Swakop put up a strong performance and won both of their games during the last rounds of the first part of the Erongo Netball League in Swakopmund on Saturday.
During the final round, Swakop beat Walvis Bay’s Sorento team by 57-17. The local team doubled their score over the game’s four quarters from 11 to 22, then to 41 and finally clinched the last quarter with 57 points. Sorento struggled from the start, only getting three points in the first quarter, and in the second quarter increasing their tally to eight. They managed to add another nine points in the third quarter, but in the fourth quarter, they failed to gain any points as Swakop kept netting the ball for 16 points.
Better but not enough
In the second game, Sorento put up a better performance against Walvis Bay's Sparta, but Sparta nevertheless won by 49-25. Sparta established and maintained their lead over each of the four quarters, 10, 21, 35 and then cemented a victory at 49. Sorento's scores amounted to 8, 11, 15 and finally 25.
Another win
The final match of the day saw Swakop, in their second game, thumping Walvis Bay's Maxuilili Netball Club by 17 points. The final score was 40-23 in favour of Swakop. The first quarter was a closely contested affair with only a two-point difference between the teams: Eight for Swakop against Maxuilili's six goals. In the second quarter, Swakop stepped on the accelerator and increased their lead to 25 points. Maxuilili only managed three points to end the quarter with nine goals. In the last two quarters, Swakop increased their goal tally to 35, ending with 40 points.
Head coach for Swakop, and also the national team, Michelle Brooks, said that the round two league action will take place in Walvis Bay on 23 July. Although Swakop clinched both their matches, they are still head-to-head with Walvis Bay's Eleven Arrows in the third spot in the league. The top two teams, Kuiseb and Anchors, are setting the pace. Brooks said that Swakop will move into a higher gear.
