The Nau-Aib Sports Expo, recently held in Okahandja, brought a wide variety of sports to the community, aiming to engage youth in healthy activities and reduce involvement in criminal behaviour.
Organised by the owner of Future Stars Academy, Alfa Murangi, together with regional sport officer for the Okahandja constituency, Mara Pack, the event sought to connect local youth to sports, invite neighbouring suburbs to participate, scout emerging talent and trial constituency teams for competitions across age groups under 12 to under 20.
Sports featured included horse racing, tennis, boxing, cricket, football, netball, volleyball and a marathon, with a focus on developing young talent for the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU), Newspapers Cup, Youth Games, Namibia Football Association (NFA) leagues, Netball Namibia and volleyball leagues.
Speaking about the event, Pack expressed gratitude to the directorate of sport for providing resources, the Okahandja municipality for offering excellent facilities and the regional councillor for donating medals to appreciate participants. She also acknowledged the NSSU sports teachers, school principals, local inspector and community members for supporting youth participation.
“The more children play sports, the less criminal activities are taking place and discipline is witnessed,” she said.
She confirmed that the next expo will be held in February 2026 to select regional teams across various age groups.
The four-day programme featured a variety of sporting and community activities.
Day one included tennis, table tennis, horse riding, football, netball and volleyball. Rugby joined the line-up on day two, along with more football, netball and volleyball action.
Day three began with a marathon, followed by a parade and the official opening ceremony, which featured speeches by Okahandja mayor Beatrice Kotungondo and sports icon Johannes “Congo” Hindjou. The day also included the marathon prize-giving, a ball-kicking ceremony, boxing bouts and a general prize-giving.
The final day was dedicated to play-offs and finals, concluding with a closing prize-giving and entertainment.
Throughout the event, several sports stalls were set up to give participants the chance to explore and engage with different sporting disciplines.
