The 2025 Bank Windhoek NASFED national short-course swimming championship concluded at the WaterCube indoor pool in Swakopmund on Sunday, after five days of competition that saw Namibian swimmers deliver a series of record-breaking performances.

Seventeen-year-old Oliver Durand underlined his dominance with multiple records, including a new national and open mark in the 100m butterfly (53.31), adding to his earlier records in the 100m individual medley (55.92) and 200m freestyle (1:47.74).

In the distance events, Madison Bergh (15–16) set a new age-group record in the 800m freestyle (9:16.71) and previously broke the open 1500m freestyle record in 17:30.36. Young prospect Patrick Durand (11–12) continued his rise with 9:52.73 in the 800m freestyle.

Sprint specialist Luke Beukes lowered the 50m butterfly record to 24.70 and clocked 22.39 in the 50m freestyle.

Vitoria de Sousa (13–14) claimed records in the 400m freestyle (4:30.18) and 200m individual medley (2:22.86).

Ludorum titles were awarded to Vitoria de Sousa (junior victrix, 208 points), Patrick Durand (junior victor, 218 points), Madison Bergh (senior victrix, 3843 points), and Oliver Durand (senior victor, 4422 points).

The championships also featured visiting teams from Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as South Africa’s Paralympic squad.

“We had seven Namibian clubs, plus regional guests. This shows the strength of competition as swimmers prepare for the Africa Junior Games in Angola, the Commonwealth Games in Ireland, and world championships,” said NASFED president Riaan Steyn.

Steyn noted Namibia’s continental progress: “We ranked third in medals at the Junior Africa Championships this year and won the Zone 4 competition for the 13th time in succession. For a small nation, we are doing fantastically in the African context.”

The championships were supported by NASFED’s long-standing sponsor Bank Windhoek.

“Without their backing, we could not stage competitions of this calibre. It is crucial for the development of swimmers on the pathway to international events,” Steyn said.
