Nandi-Ndaitwah to officially open Youth Games today

Africa's much-anticipated showpiece, the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games, will officially be opened by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah today at 18:00 at Windhoek's Independence Stadium.The multi-sport biennial event opening ceremony, which will run until 13 July, will also feature a blindfold race challenge on the opening day, which will see sports deputy minister Dino Ballotti take on Paralympic gold medallist Lahja Ishitile.According to sports minister Sanet Steenkamp, speaking during her national assembly address on Tuesday, the tournament will bring together over 2 022 athletes and officials from the Region 5 member countries, including hosts Namibia, Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.Namibia’s edition of the games will feature athletics (including able-bodied, visually impaired and Special Olympics), basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, e-sports, football, judo, karate, netball, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and swimming.“The events will be hosted across Windhoek and Swakopmund, with athletics and swimming taking place in Swakopmund,” she said.Network Media Hub (NMH) will broadcast volleyball, boxing and the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Women’s U20 football matches live from the University of Namibia (Unam) sports field on Network Television (NTV), available on DStv channel 285, GOtv channel 25, online at oneuptwo.com and the My Zone Facebook page.– mariud@nsh.com.na
