Strong winds and a challenging route did little to deter determined athletes at the recent Lüderitz Namport Nedbank Powerhouse Challenge, where the road running segment produced exciting performances and personal milestones.

Half marathon (21 km)

Geros Koper of the Keetmanshoop Athletics Club claimed victory in the half marathon, completing the 21 km race in an impressive time of 1:25:22. He was followed by Jerry Kale, who clocked 1:43:13 to finish second, while Ferdinand Moses rounded off the top three with a time of 1:55:10.

“It was a wonderful race and I enjoyed it. I looked forward to competing here and saw it as an adventure,” said Koper.

“The organisers should consider starting the event earlier in the day. I used this race as part of my preparation for the upcoming Vivo Marathon, the Championship qualifiers and the Husab Marathon.”

In the women’s category, Miele Swiegers took top honours with a time of 2:12:54. Etuna Nuuyoma came second in 2:24:53, followed by Johame Boshoff in 2:38:30.

10 km race

Sixteen-year-old Quinton Sipholino, also of the Keetmanshoop Athletics Club, showed maturity and control beyond his years as he won the 10 km race in a time of 39:26. His coach, Richard April, followed in second place with 41:50, while Aldrin Saunders crossed the line third in 47:53.

“I had a good race despite the absence of strong competition. I ran at my own pace and enjoyed the wind behind me on the way back,” said Sipholino.

Abby Burgess led the women’s field with a winning time of 1:06:16. Annaloice Penduka followed in 1:08:20, with Paulina Mbundu finishing third in 1:10:20. Fourteen athletes competed in the 10 km event.

5 km race

Leevi Ndemunkondjela was the standout performer in the 5 km race, taking top spot with a swift time of 14:35. Panduleni Shehama secured second in 20:23, while Akinbiyi Ondunlade claimed third in 20:56. The short-distance race saw 19 athletes participating.
