Kasomba, Bezuidenhout lead pack at Elite shoot

Teresa Kasomba and Ru-Wayne Bezuidenhout led the way in the senior girls’ and boys’ divisions at last weekend’s Central Elite Archery Club (CEAC) shoot in Windhoek. The event featured bullseye and animal rounds with a combined maximum score of 1200.Held under the auspices of African Genesis Archery (AGA), the tournament drew 117 archers from across the country, who braved the cold to put their marksmanship to the test for valuable national ranking points.Kasomba (Community Hope School) and Bezuidenhout (Windhoek Afrikaans Private School) emerged on top with dominant scores of 1113 and 1146, respectively.Hot on Kasomba’s heels was WAP’s Jani de Beer, who also scored 1113 but settled for second place based on a tie-breaker, with Kasomba registering more tens (66 to 49). The senior girls’ third place went to Anielka Hayward from Danie Joubert Combined School with a score of 1111.In the boys’ section, Bezuidenhout was followed by Burton Weakley (Windhoek High School - 1143), with Duan Kruger (Roots Gymnasium - 1139) completing the podium.Junior championsThe junior division also delivered strong performances, with Charisme Rothen (Pro-Ed Academy - 1066) and Willem van der Merwe (WAP - 1158) topping the girls’ and boys’ categories, respectively.Rothen was followed by Amelia von Wielligh (Berg-Op Academy - 1030), with Zeanette Jacobs (WHS - 1004) placing third.In the boys’ contest, Van der Merwe held off Luka Janse van Vuuren (Moria Private School - 1130), who finished second, while Börn Bergmann (CEAC - 1089) took third.Adult and Cubs divisionsNon-school-going archers competed in the Adult Archery Group (AAG) category, shooting both bullseye and 3D rounds with a maximum score of 900.Charne Coetzee dominated the AAG women’s division with a score of 849, followed by Ronelle Raes (835) and Alida Bezuidenhout (816).In the men’s AAG section, Berend Blom led the pack (845), ahead of Paul van der Merwe (817) and Cruzeiro Garobeb (792).The Cubs division also impressed, with young archers competing in two bullseye rounds for a maximum score of 300.WAP’s Louw Rousseau (264) and Christof Le Roux (246) placed first and second in the boys’ category, while Moria’s Karl Compaan took third (229).In the girls’ category, Hope Bahun (Community Hope School - 186) took top honours, followed by Olivia Sakeus (WHS - 185) and Talia Thatcher (CEAC - 171).World Tournament on horizonTournament director Anita Park said members of the national team were paired with development archers to elevate the level of competition.“Congratulations to those who shot the much-sought-after 50 score. Thank you to WHS for the use of their facilities and to all the officials who ensured everything ran smoothly.“We also thank the archers and their parents for the time and effort they continue to invest in archery,” she said.Namibia is set to host the AGA World Tournament from 24 to 26 July in Walvis Bay, where archers from Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana will face off against Namibian talent.– mariud@nsh.com.na
