Iipinge edges closer to World Cup whistle dream

Namibian umpire Aron Iipinge has moved another step closer to his ambition of one day taking the whistle at a Netball World Cup after earning his Africa A umpiring grade at the recently concluded Africa Netball Cup in Nairobi, Kenya.Iipinge arrived at the continental showpiece, held from 19 to 26 September, as an Africa B umpire before completing the written examination, fitness test and practical assessments required for his upgrade.The upgrade followed his on-court assessment by members of the Umpire Appointments Panel (UAP), as Namibia’s only umpire, male or female, at the event.Iipinge received five appointments on his first Africa Netball Cup assignment in the men’s competition.His final two appointments saw him take charge of the bronze-medal play-off, in which Uganda defeated hosts Kenya 46-35 to claim third place.He also served as reserve umpire for the gold-medal match, where South Africa’s Protea Warriors defended their continental crown with a 49-45 victory over Eswatini.Tested by men’s gameBeyond the grading, Iipinge said the intensity and speed of men’s netball provided another important test of how he reads and manages a match.He pointed to the players’ ability to operate at pace while pushing the boundaries within the laws of the game as one of the most demanding aspects from an umpiring perspective.“[Nonetheless,] it was a great experience,” he said.Iipinge said working alongside officials from different netball backgrounds, coupled with the feedback he received from the UAP after his appointments, added another layer to his development.“Every match, you pick up something new. There is always something you experience that you might not have expected to happen in a match,” he said.He added that the event taught him to keep his rule book close and his wits about him “because everything in there matters and can happen in a match.”Climbing the gradesIipinge’s latest qualification continues an umpiring journey he said began in 2021 after initially taking up netball as a player in 2019.His interest in officiating grew from occasionally stepping in to umpire during training sessions before he decided to pursue the whistle more seriously.He worked his way through Netball Namibia’s Bronze, Silver and Gold grades while gaining regular match experience through competitions such as the MTC Namibia Netball Premier League and Khomas Netball League.His progression onto the continental pathway followed in 2024, when he obtained his Africa C grade during the Africa Netball Cup at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund.A year later, Iipinge advanced to Africa B during the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Youth Games in Windhoek before completing the next step to Africa A in Nairobi this month.Iipinge pointed out that such regular exposure to higher-intensity matches has helped him climb the umpiring ladder.“The more you get to officiate at these tournaments, the more skills you pick up and the more confidence you gain when you go out there to officiate,” he said.“I would like to get more opportunities to officiate at tournaments where I can be assessed again and continue improving.”World stage remains the goalIipinge’s focus now turns towards International Talent Identified (ITID) Umpire status. The ultimate destination he has in mind has not changed.“Of course, one day I must be there,” he said of his ambition to officiate at a Netball World Cup.“That is the world netball stage. That is where we want to be and where we have to showcase what we can do when we hold the whistle.”He acknowledged that getting there will require more than accumulating qualifications, with regular exposure equally important.“It takes a lot. You need to be active in your country and in your region, and then World Netball also needs to identify you,” he said.– mariud@nsh.com.na
