Kamrouz Ghayouri (14) from St Paul’s College achieved a remarkable feat last weekend, clinching three gold medals across three age categories at the third tournament of the Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA).

Hosted at Windhoek’s Wanderers Sports Hall, the Arysteq & Simonis Storm Schools Tournament Series saw Ghayouri secure gold in the U19, U17 and U15 age categories.

He dominated the tournament ahead of silver medallists Caden Bosman of Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS) in the U19 category, schoolmate Agape Chicalu in the U17 and Fillemon Ikanda of Olof Palme Primary School in the U15 category.

The latter notably caused Chicalu a big upset in the U15 semi-finals.

Speaking to this publication, Ghayouri admitted he was not expecting the treble. “I went into the tournament just making sure to give my best. The competition is really tough now and I make sure I play each point the best I can,” he said.

“Winning three gold medals felt absolutely amazing and a dream come true. I have been working really hard and I am glad it paid off. I am very grateful for this achievement.”

Ghayouri extended gratitude to his coaches, Wayne Green of Wanderers and Simon Gologolo from South Africa, who helped him hone his table tennis skills.

“My mom, Taschiona Gawaxab, also took me to a table tennis camp in France called Hennebont Academy over the Easter holidays, which really helped a lot,” he said.

Other winners

Other tournament winners included Nathanael Dayelai of Olof Palme Primary School, who defeated Daniel Beukes of Orban Primary School in the final of the U13 category. Terence Kadandara of St Paul’s College claimed the U11 title after overcoming Tangi Haufiku of Olof Palme Primary School.

In the girls’ categories, Lian Gebauer of DHPS dominated the U19 and U17 divisions, beating Justina Namupolo of Hage Geingob High School and Karolina Shigwedha of Ella du Plessis High School, respectively.

Shigwedha went on to take gold in the U15 category, defeating St Paul’s College’s Cadence Farmer to claim the title.

Another impressive showing came from Ester Nelenge of Olof Palme Primary School, who claimed both the U13 and U11 titles, defeating Sylvi Ikanda of Hillside Primary School in both finals.

Record turnout

Tournament director Theo Beukes extended gratitude to the sponsors, lauding their continued support in the growth of the sport. “The third tournament saw a record turnout of 79 players participating in the boys’ and girls’ sections across the U11 to U19 age categories.

“Notably, St Joseph’s Primary School from Rehoboth participated for the first time this year, contributing 22 entries and introducing new developing players to the game. The date of the fourth tournament will be announced soon,” he said.
