Full attention on Uganda friendly
Rugby
Despite limited time spent together in preparation so far since the first arrivals of its professional players abroad, the national rugby squad will set out to maintain a high standard of play in their first warm-up match for the season against visiting Uganda at Walvis Bay Private School’s Naartjie Park on Saturday.
In a rare opportunity to bring international teams to rural rugby hubs, the Walvis Bay community gets to host the East African team, still buzzing with excitement just a week after FNB Kudus’ historic triumph in the Namibia Rugby Union premier league final.
Both Namibia and Uganda have their sights firmly set on the same end goal, which is the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup / 2027 Rugby World Cup Australia qualifying tournament hosted in Kampala next month (July 8-19).
For Namibia, it will be the first run-out since Jacques Burger took over as director of rugby from Allister Coetzee late last year.
Despite indications from Uganda that the touring union will regard Saturday’s clash as a full test match, the NRU’s CEO John Heynes clarified this week that the Namibian selection will be the Welwitschias, involved in a non-test international friendly.
Flank Prince !Gaoseb was named to captain the Welwitschias on Saturday. The starting team contains only five players uncapped at test level, namely prop Otja Auala (Rhino rugby academy in Cape Town), lock Oliver Kurz (Rissho University, Japan), fly-half Godwin Silvanus (CSA Steaua Bucuresti), wing Jurgen Meyer (Wanderers) and fullback Aston Mukwiilongo (Kudus).
The Ugandans, boosted earlier this year by the appointments of former Springbok fullback Zane Kirchner and experienced former Tuks and Blue Bulls coach Nollis Marais to its high-performance staff, will proceed from here to a five-day training camp in Nylstroom before facing the Limpopo Blue Bulls next weekend. The Cranes also have a friendly lined up against the Pumas on 27 June.
The main match (kick-off 15:00) will be preceded by two coastal Barbarian teams in a curtain-raiser at 12:00.
Tickets N$100 / kids 12-16 years N$50 / kids under 12 free.
