Burton Weakley and Diedere Mostert were crowned champions of African Genesis Archery in Namibia's national schools and senior championship on Saturday. Weakley, who represented the Windhoek High School, scored 1 144 overall, while Mostert of Okahandja's Berg-Op Academy secured her victory with a score of 1 116. “I enjoy this game and would love to represent my country at the Olympics one day. This game is all about keeping focus and making sure that you hit the target. “I had a great afternoon and I am very proud of how far I have come,” Weakley said. Dawid Du Toit from Windhoek Afrikaans Private School won the animal round (max 600) with a score of 536, while Chrisna Jaylene Smith of Pro-Ed Academy secured the victory for junior girls with a score of 526. Du Toit also walked away with the junior bulls eye and animal (max 1200) titles, while Smith took the girls category again.Biggest eventCommunity Hope School received the top National Archery in Schools Programme (NASP) award, finishing first with 173 points, followed by Pro-Ed with 159 and Berg-Op with 124. The AAG ladies category was won by Anja von Watzdorf, scoring 565 points, while Ronelle Raes came in second with 545. Event organiser Pony Weakley said the championship was a success given the number of participants and the quality on display. “Well, this is the biggest event of archery in Namibia because of the number of archers we have. “I can say that archery in Namibia is growing because we have a number of archers joining the sport every year. “We have been struggling a bit with sponsors and that is why we call on companies to come on board and support this archery in the country."
