The fifth edition of the Standard Bank Namibia Junior Hockey Initiative National Development Tournament for under-13 boys and girls is scheduled for this Saturday at the artificial turf of Windhoek High School’s (WHS) international venue, the Trustco Davin Astro.
The first edition was held in 2021 with five towns from four regions represented. These towns were Windhoek, Rehoboth, Mariental, Okahandja and Gobabis.
The second edition was held in 2022 and the regions grew from four to eleven. These regions were represented by the following towns: Windhoek, Rehoboth, Mariental, Okahandja, Gobabis, Tsumeb, Rundu, Outapi, Ongwediva, Outjo and Omaruru.
In 2023, the third edition added four more towns, namely Katima Mulilo, Nkurenkuru, Helao Nafidi and Walvis Bay. For the first time in over twenty years, Namibia saw a youth development program in hockey that represented each of the 14 regions of the country.
The 2024 edition was another milestone and saw 13 of the 14 regions taking part in the fourth edition (the Rundu team did not attend).
For this coming weekend, all 14 regions will once again have teams taking part in one of the biggest grassroots development programmes on Namibian soil.
Erwin Handura, the project manager for Standard Bank’s Junior Hockey Initiative, said: “Standard Bank Namibia committed themselves to develop the future of our nation – the youth – through this developmental initiative, which is run and administered by the Hockey School of Excellence.”
A significant total number of 320 under-13 players, 64 coaches and 60 officials will compete at the fifth edition of the Standard Bank Junior Hockey Initiative, scheduled for Saturday at WHS.
“The overall level of hockey skills illustrated by these junior players after five years has improved drastically,” said Handura.
Meanwhile, the national U13 development team returned from Cape Town last weekend after a week-long training camp and exposure to high-level hockey in South Africa.
“We look forward to hosting all the regions on Saturday and to keep improving the Standard Bank Junior Hockey tournament.”
The 16 towns from 14 regions to be represented at the fifth edition this weekend will be Keetmanshoop, Mariental, Rehoboth, Gobabis, Walvis Bay, Omaruru, Windhoek, Okahandja, Tsumeb, Outjo, Ongwediva, Outapi, Helao Nafidi, Nkurenkuru, Rundu and Katima Mulilo.
