Embassy gives recognition to Pienaar Sensei

“The concept of kendo is to discipline the mind and strengthen the character through the application of the katana (sword).”This was quoted by Japan’s ambassador to Namibia, Shinichi Asazuma, on Saturday, when he presented the Japanese foreign ministers’ commendations to Namibia Kendo Federation president, Andre Pienaar Sensei, for his efforts in developing the martial art in Namibia.The selection criteria for the foreign minister's commendation are those who have received ambassador's commendations from the embassies of their respective countries and who the Japanese ministry of foreign affairs recognizes as having made a particularly significant contribution to the friendly relations between Japan and the respective countries. Also, a strong recommendation from the ambassador is required.“For over a decade, Pienaar Sensei dedicated himself to the promotion and development of kendo in Namibia. His contributions to the development of cultural exchange as a bridge between Japan and Namibia are immeasurable,” said Asazuma during the event at his official residence.“Despite the initial lack of sufficient instruction and equipment in Namibia, he has, with the support of instructors from Japan and Europe, steadily built up the environment, creating a foundation where kendo is enjoyed by adults and children alike. “This effort has been far from easy and is truly a testament to his passion and perseverance. “Furthermore, Pienaar Sensei has actively promoted exchanges with several dojos (clubs) in Iizuka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, fostering grassroots exchanges between Namibia and Japan, through instructor visits and shared training sessions.”Earlier on Saturday, a successful Gasshuku (training camp) for kendo students was held at the dojo at DHPS.Kendo is a traditional Japanese martial art that uses bamboo swords as well as protective armour, similar to that used by the ancient Samurai warriors.Asazuma said the commendation was an expression of the Japanese government’s gratitude and strong respect for his long-term training and development activities. Pienaar thanked the ambassador for the equipment and continued support received from Japan.
