Du Toit, #Ouses dominate sixth junior tourney

Central Tennis Courts served as the battleground for 70 tennis prodigies.

Henlou du Toit and Natalia #Ouses were crowned champions of the sixth junior tournament, recently concluded at Olympia’s Central Tennis Courts in Windhoek.

With a turnout of 70 players competing from the U10 to U25 age categories across the boys and girls sections, the tournament saw the country’s finest youngsters battle it out for medals in doubles and singles.

Top-seeded Du Toit dominated the U25 boys’ singles. The category was combined with stronger girl opponents for fair competition. Jaden van der Westhuizen placed second, with Stephan Koen in third.

The eventual U25 title winner began his campaign with a 7-5, 6-2 win over fourth seed Leandre Louw. He then faced Van der Westhuizen in a tense final and won 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Reflecting on his victory, Du Toit was all smiles, saying: “It’s quite nice to still win against an opponent who has improved a lot since the last time we met, when I beat him love and laughs. He found me ready for this one, as my game has also improved in kind.”

In the U25 doubles, the duo of Tadiwa Mombeyarara and Johan Theron stunned top seeds Du Toit and Van der Westhuizen 6-1, 7-5 in the final to clinch the overall title.



U16 winners

#Ouses dominated the U16 girls’ singles, which was played in a round robin format, ahead of Hilya Nana Campbell in second place and Zaycriesha Bedja in third.

She clinched the overall title after recording a clean sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bedja and a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Campbell.

The U16 girls’ doubles saw the strong pairing of Campbell and #Ouses prevail, overcoming Emma Brinkmann and Secilia Nghitewapo 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 in a tense final.

In the U16 boys’ singles, Luan Brand reigned supreme, ahead of second-placed Nicolai Pienaar and third-placed Kondjeni Shivande.

In the U16 boys’ doubles, the Pienaar brothers were crowned champions after a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Gabriel Gurirab and Shivande in the final.



U14 winners

The U14 girls’ singles saw third seed Elrica Nakusera dominate, finishing ahead of top seed Nghitewapo and second seed Brinkmann.

The U14 girls were drawn with the U16 girls for the doubles competition.

In the U14 boys’ singles, top seed Johan Theron held his own, with second seed Mombeyarara finishing second and third seed Gurirab placing third.

Some of the stronger U14 boys were drawn into the U16 boys’ doubles.

In the U14 boys’ doubles, the Gathuru brothers, Peter and Steven, claimed the title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Emilson Ngola and Eric Pretorius.



U12 winners

In the U12 girls’ singles, Albertina Johannes made a name for herself with a statement victory over top seed and eventual runner-up Madison Hoff to be crowned champion. Second seed Christina Boshoff placed third.

There were no U12 girls’ doubles.

In the U12 boys’ singles, Joshua Diergaardt, who opened his campaign with a walkover, went on to clinch the title ahead of second-placed Zephan van der Westhuizen and Peter Gathuru in third.

In the U12 boys’ doubles, the top-seeded duo of Paulus and Van der Westhuizen beat Diergaardt and Adriaan van Wyk 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6 to take the title.



U10 winners

In the U10 boys’ singles, second seed Adriaan Tromp was crowned champion, ahead of top seed Pwoove Paulus and McLauren Karumbona.

In the U10 boys’ doubles, Paulus and Tromp teamed up to beat Aisindi and Vermaak 8-5 to claim the title.

The U10 girls’ singles saw Chloé Esterhuyse crowned champion after she beat Irene Kavangu 8-0 and Adele Buys 8-1. Buys finished second, while Kavangu settled for third place.
