Dowie conquers clay for third J60 title in Kigali

At only 15, Namibia’s Israel Dowie completed a hat-trick of World Tennis Junior Tour singles titles this year after conquering clay at the J60 Kigali tournament in Rwanda last weekend.Also known as the Rwanda Junior Open, the tournament saw Dowie live up to his top seeding with victories over opponents from India, Hong Kong, France, Kenya and Czechia.He beat India’s Manan Rai 6-2, 7-5 and Hong Kong’s Takuto Matsuo 6-1, 7-5 before overcoming eighth-seeded Frenchman Hugo Jathiere 6-2, 7-6(5) in the quarterfinals.Dowie was leading Kenya’s third seed Zayyan Virani 5-2 in their semi-final when Virani retired, sending him through to face Czech second seed Nicolas Moravec.He raced through the opening set of the final with a 6-0 bagel before Moravec responded by taking the second 6-4. Dowie held his nerve in the decider and closed out the title with a 6-4 final set.First clay crownThe victory handed Dowie his first World Tennis Junior Tour singles title on clay, adding to the J60 crowns he secured in Windhoek in May and at the J60 Pretoria in South Africa a month later.The three-title run represents a considerable turnaround after more than two years of repeated semi-final and final disappointments following his World Tennis Junior Tour debut towards the end of 2023.Dowie, who is based in Cape Town and trains at the Anthony Harris Tennis Academy, said winning his maiden singles title in Windhoek in front of his parents and grandparents gave him confidence.“[Winning again in] Pretoria assured me Windhoek wasn’t just a once-off result and that I could keep winning at this level. Proving that in Kigali was special in a different way because it was my first [World Tennis Junior Tour title] on clay,” he said.Although he has played on clay since he was about nine and trains on the surface at his home academy, Dowie said triumphing in Kigali strengthened his belief that he could adapt to different courts and conditions.Junior Wimbledon hopesDowie had also contested consecutive clay-court J100 tournaments in Neunkirchen and Mönchengladbach, Germany, shortly before travelling to Kigali.He received an opening-round bye and reached the third round in Neunkirchen before narrowly losing a three-setter in the opening round at Mönchengladbach.His father, Duane, told Sport Wrap that competing at those higher-grade tournaments formed part of a deliberate push to secure a ranking high enough to enter the boys’ qualifying draw at Junior Wimbledon next year.Dowie’s relationship with clay stretches back further. In 2022, he won the Category One Tennis Europe under-12 title at the Playas de Santa Ponsa Trophy in Spain.Favourite surfaceHe recalled coach Anthony Harris making him kiss the clay and encouraging him to embrace the surface.“He taught me that if I didn’t learn to love the surface, I would have very little chance of truly believing I could win on it. I’ve carried that lesson with me ever since. It has played a big part in the way I approach clay. [It’s] actually my favourite surface,” Dowie said.Asked about turning repeated near misses into three titles in one season, Dowie said the breakthrough required years of work and complete commitment.“Losses are difficult, but sometimes you learn more from losing than you do from winning. I’ve had to learn how to close tournaments and trust the [process], rather than feeling that everything needs to change after a loss.”He credited his parents, coaches and wider support team for continuing to invest in his development through the wins and defeats.Dowie also thanked the Anthony Harris Tennis Academy, “Oom Herman”, the Janine and Suzelle Davin Sport Trust, the MATCH Foundation, his coaches and the Namibian tennis fraternity.– mariud@nsh.com.na
