Golden Boxing and Fitness Academy hosted their second boxing development tournament at Mix, one of Windhoek’s informal settlements, on Saturday.

After a successful earlier tournament in Oshitenda in Windhoek which drew a large number of spectators, event organizer Tobias Naule said: “Our development tournament aims to provide a platform for young and talented amateur boxers to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience in the ring.

“This is only the beginning, we want to as many such tournaments as possible and with financial backing we can do even more to develop the sport of boxing in Namibia.”

With 16 amateur fights on the schedule, community members were very excited and rocked up in numbers to witness the action.

The only fight between two female boxers, Natalia Lukas (Golden Boxing Club) and Anna-abhia Shigwedha (MTC Sunshine Academy) was probably the highlight of the tournament.

Spectators were on their feet for this one which Lukas won by knockout in the first round.

Promising talent Erickson Shiyandja (Golden Boxing) took on David Shatumbu (Mistake Boxing Gym) in what was an entertaining match. Shiyandja won on a 2-1.

Community leader Kondjela Ndivayele said: “It’s really important for us to host this events in places like Mix. We are not exposed to a lot of sports, but especially the kids are really excited that the tournament is taking place here.

“We plan to have a place here where young and old can always come practice, because a lot of people are interested. ”

Nakale Simon, a resident from Mix, said: “This is what we’ve been wanting, this is really nice for us here from Mix.

“We love sports, but there’s no electricity. Therefore having tournaments like this hosted here really makes me happy, because we can come sit and watch the young ones in the ring. This is really good for our community.”

After the tournament Tobias Naule promised that this was only the beginning. “Golden Boxing and Fitness Academy will make sure to host such tournaments as much as possible. We want to bring boxing to the people. With the right help and financial assistance, we would like to take boxing to remote areas. This is how raw talent can be discovered.”
