Gladiators off to a good start
Coleman, Kooper goals boost team
The Brave Gladiators beat Equatorial Guinea 2-0 yesterday afternoon.
The Brave Gladiators’ Zenatha Coleman and Ivonne Kooper sent their side into the second leg of the African Women’s Olympic qualifier match against Equatorial Guinea, which will be contested on 18 July.
The two sides met at the FNB Stadium, a neutral ground for both sides, with Turkish-based Coleman putting her side first in the 34th minute.
Kooper then added the second goal in the 54th minute to seal the win.
The squad is led by Paulus Shipanga, who has been fighting tooth and nail to get the players ready for the clash.
Advancement game
The second leg will take place at the Estadio de Malabo in Equatorial Guinea.
The winner of the tie will advance to the second round, where they will meet Morocco in October, a difficult challenge against a team that is currently preparing for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
If they advance in that fixture, then the winner of the second-round clash between Ivory Coast and Tunisia awaits in the third stage. Also on that side of the draw are Ghana and Zambia, the latter another team heading to the World Cup.
Namibia have not qualified for major finals in the past but did play in the 2014 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations they hosted.
Equatorial Guinea appeared at the 2011 Women’s World Cup and were champions of the continent in 2008 and 2012, but have never been to the Olympics.
