Determined Rehoboth win at Unam

Prop Kevin Cloete’s FNB Rehoboth team scored their first win against FNB Unam at the Unam Stadium in many years, as their 31-25 victory on Saturday kept them strongly in the hunt for a top-four finish in the NRU premier league.

Other than current front-runners FNB Kudus, FNB Wanderers and Trustco United, very few teams have achieved success at the student team’s fortress, in front of their Red Army of fans, since 2015.

Tries by Diego Loubser (normally a centre, but playing flank) and lock Jerome Schumann, as well as two tries by scrum-half Miquel Busch put Rehoboth on their way to leading 14-10 at halftime and ultimately keeping their nose in front until the end.

Henrique Olivier, Rehoboth fly-half, contributed four conversions on a somewhat windy afternoon.

Unam fought back to lead 22-21 midway through the second half, but ended up short in a match of vital importance to both teams.

Hooker Jaden Jeffery, scrumhalf AJ Kearns and flank Berry Gande scored the three tries for the students, while full-back Lorenzo Louis added the kick points.

Referee Danie Koen, who had handled multiple matches during the weekend, suffered a thigh muscle injury late in the second half and was replaced by Ngututue Mate.

Suburbs remain fourth

FNB Western Suburbs overcame the fact that no recognised referee pitched up at the Dr Lemmer school field for their match against FNB Reho Falcon. Despite a late kick-off, Suburbs came away 44-22 winners.

The home team’s resistance resulted in tries by centre Liam Parker and flankers Russell van Wyk and Keynnen Basson, along with scxrum-half Enrique Husselmann’s two conversions and one penalty.

However, the visitors from Khomasdal scored six tries – two by captain and full-back Gino Wilson and one each by wing Dumarcho Hartung, centre Daryll Vries, fly-half Ethan Beukes and lock Fidel Micolleney. Successful conversions came from replacement Bronwon Willemse (3) and Ethan Beukes.
