Desert Regional tournament delivers top action

Olympic hopeful Romeo Goliath recorded a great comeback win against his Angolan opponent.
The Namibia Wrestling Federation’s Desert Regional tournament held at the Windhoek Gymnasium school hall saw wrestlers entertaining the fans and wrestling enthusiast, while showcasing world-class wrestling.
Alexandro Haininga took gold in the Greco-Roman after defeating Cliff Nguatjiti in the final 10-6 on points.
Lazarus Haibodi beat Joel Ipingi to scoop third place in the Greco-Roman category.
The Freestyle wrestling category was won by Lazarus Haibodi after dominating Cliff Nguatjiti 6-2 and winning by a technical decision in the process.
Joel Ipingi got the better of Alexandro Haininga in the freestyle category to take the third place in that division.
The women’s freestyle category also lived up to the hype as Swakopmund’s Silvie Haoses made easy work of Nicole Basson with a 10-0 technical superiority win, while Ester Abraham recorded a 12-5 win over Angola’s Joseth Mavunga.
Probably the match of the day was between Namibian Olympic hopeful Romeo Goliath and Angola’s Miguel Antonio.
Many had thought that Goliath would lose on home soil after Antonio led the first round 7-0.
Goliath however pounced in the second and final round to produce one of the comebacks of the tournament to beat Antonio 8-7 with text-book wrestling.
Namibia Wrestling Federation secretary-general Rozanne van der Merwe expressed satisfaction with how the whole training and tournament went.
“This was really a good tournament and a good week for wrestling in Namibia, because the wrestlers got a good education in terms of what they were required to do.
“We would like to thank the sponsors who came on board and everyone that made this event possible.
“I must say that the event and the training camp was a success and we hope for more such events in the future,” Van der Merwe said.
The event was also attended by United World Wrestling development officer Vincent Aka – a three-time Olympian that represented France.
Aka expressed satisfaction with the event and hopes that Namibia will host more events of such magnitude.
