WBPS rewards top sport performers

Walvis Bay Private School (WBPS) held its annual sports prize-giving ceremony on 12 October, awarding hardworking and talented sportsmen and women.Jaco Duvenhage, a member of the board of directors for sports, explained that three different types of individuals would be receiving recognition. “The first group of individuals are those blessed with talent. To them, winning comes easy. It&#039;s a walk in the park and they don’t have to put in a lot of effort to achieve awards. The second group of individuals are those who must work very hard. They do have some talent, but to compete, they need to put in a lot of effort by pushing their bodies to the limits and working extremely hard for an achievement. The third and final group of individuals are blessed with both talent and the skill of working hard.”Duvenhage emphasised that every young athlete can conquer the future with hard work and said that sport is the best medium to create a well-balanced life for individuals who will use their full potential by applying it alongside hard work. The sportsmen and women are chosen based on exceptional achievement and versatility. The Primary Sportswoman of the Year is Zoë Beukes, with Wehan Groenewald being the Primary Sportsman of the Year. The award for Secondary Junior Sportswoman of the Year went to Juané Brand and the title of Secondary Junior Sportsman of the Year was scooped up by Adriaan Boonzaaier. Iwann van Staden earned the Danie Weitz trophy as the Secondary Senior Sportsman of the Year. Roché Thomas took the title of Secondary Senior Sportswoman of the Year. Thomas participated in athletics, netball, and karate. “The biggest challenge I faced was time management. Juggling three different sports codes in one day adds up to approximately twenty hours a week. Schoolwork was quite difficult, but with perseverance and good time management, it was all possible,” she said.Teams that performed well in 2023 also received recognition. The floating trophy for the best hockey team was awarded to the u/8 girls&#039; team, who finished on an undefeated note for the year. The Old Mutual trophy for the best rugby team went to the school’s first rugby team who won the Hennie de Waal Festival, the Council Cup, and advanced to the semi-final. The floating trophy for best netball team went to the National Super League winners, the u/13 netball team.
