Traffic officials ready for festive rush

‘Play your part in contributing to road safety’

Thousands of motorists and hundreds of public transport operators are expected to hit the road this festive season.

With schools closing, families are already heading to their holiday destinations (the coast in most cases), while many workers are packing and heading home for the festive season.

Law enforcers are also bracing themselves for a bumper period on the roads. Walvis Bay's acting traffic chief, Clifton Jacobs, assured that traffic officials at the coast are ready to enforce the law this festive season. “We have plans set out for the festive season. We expect a lot of people to come down to the coast with several events set to happen around town. Roadblock operations will commence on 15 December. Apart from the fixed roadblocks, the municipality of Walvis Bay - in cooperation with the Namibian police - will also have roadblocks around town where we will do speed checks, check the roadworthiness of vehicles, and administer random alcohol tests,” he said.

Drivers can thus expect to be pulled over for a random breath test and, as such, Jacobs urged motorists to avoid drinking and driving. “Stay away from alcohol when driving and avoid driving in restricted areas. Always make sure that you wear your seatbelt, stay away from your cell phone, and play your part in contributing to road safety.”

Jacobs also advised road users to drive carefully. “Rather arrive five or ten minutes late at your destination than to speed and cause accidents where people can get seriously injured, or worse, die as a result.”

Road safety

He highlighted that although Namibia is classified as one of the countries with the best road infrastructures in the world, motorists still need to play their part by adhering to the road rules.

“Be patient, drive carefully, stick to the speed limits, make sure your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition, and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.”

Quad bikes

He warned members of the public not to drive quad bikes along the beach.

“Driving quad bikes and unlicensed vehicles along the coastline is prohibited. Rather use the dune belt on your way to Swakopmund on the right-hand side of the road. We are not here to spoil your holiday, but to ensure your safety and that of many other motorists and pedestrians,” he advised.
