Swimmers to make a splash in Swakopmund

The Namibia Aquatic Sports Federation (NASFED) will host its Short Course National Championships at The Cube in Swakopmund from tomorrow until 1 October.This is an annual event with qualified swimmers from all the Namibian clubs partaking. Over the past year - during the short course season - these clubs participated in various short-course swimming galas at venues throughout the country, where the local swimmers had the chance to qualify for the prestigious Short Course National Championships.A total of 246 talented swimmers between the ages of seven to 71 years have entered and will compete in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and the individual medley."We are excited to announce that the competition is at a higher level than in previous years as we have entries from 16 foreign clubs from South Africa, Angola, and Zambia - sending 30 of their top swimmers. This year we have put in an even bigger effort to get the neighbouring countries to partake in the competition,” said Riaan Steyn, the president of NASFED.He added that this aligns with a drive to give Namibian swimmers the best possible competition at galas and to promote the country, the federation, pools, and facilities as a sports tourism destination. Steyn further explained that the foreign swimmers are seeded in the top three placings in 17 of the 80 events. “If one considers that 35 of these events are masters or relays in which the foreign clubs did not send swimmers or did not take part, this is some serious competition for our swimmers. The participation of these swimmers will surely keep us at the edge of our seats and allow us to especially witness the intense battle between local and international participants.” According to Steyn, hosting high-profile sporting events of this magnitude brings publicity by raising Namibia&#039;s profile and the potential for increasing sports tourism. “By working with local stakeholders, these sectors can benefit from freely marketing themselves and making a positive impact in their community. Sports tourism has a significant impact on the economic growth of cities across the globe. It creates job opportunities, increases tax revenue, boosts local businesses, and attracts new businesses to the area.”The meet will be broadcast live on various social media platforms and the official opening on Saturday 30 September at 08:00. The Saturday events will play live on DStv channel 285 and GOtv channel 94.
