Parkies scrape through tense Super League win

There was great joy at Pionierspark Primary School as their under-13 rugby team retained the national Super League title for another year.
The finals on Saturday, sponsored by Officeconomix, saw a repeat of last season with Windhoek Gymnasium and Parkies battling it out for top honours again, but this game was very different from last year’s clash at the Windhoek High School Vegkop Stadium, when Parkies overran Gymnasium by 33-7.
Windhoek Gymnasium’s forwards came out with a mission as they scored the first unconverted try through lanky lock Jaden van der Westhuizen, to have the score at 5-0.
Parkies fought hard and levelled the score with a try by nr. 8 AJ Willemse, as two yellow cards to Gymnasium took effect. The final whistle at 5-5 took the match into extra time and it took a penalty kick for Parkies to retain their title as they were crowned Under 13 Super League champions.
Parkies captain and lock CJ Vermeulen, who landed the winning kick, in his post-match interview said: “I am really happy with the win. The game was really tough, but we stuck to our structure and that was enough. Thanks to Windhoek Gymnasium for coming out, they gave us a real game!”
In the main curtainraiser, Walvis Bay Primary School won the U13 Reserve League after beating Rehoboth Primary School 34-10.
Walvis Bay’s impressive fullback Gordon Beresford scored four tries with very similar individual counter-attacking runs, using his speed and hand-off to beat several opponents. Centre Anro Bouwer and fly-half Alonzo Abrahams also scored tries to contribute to the runaway win.
Julian van Wyk, peculiarly picked as a tighthead prop for Namibia at the U13 Craven Week but used at flyhalf for his schools team, scored both their tries.
Windhoek Gymnasium’s U12s beat Parkies 13-7 in another nail-biting final. The Gimmies try by nr. 8 André Badenhorst, conversion and penalty by flyhalf Jacques Bruwer and a penalty by centre Ryan Steyn was enough to seal the deal.
Parkies U12’s reply ended with a try by fullback Reece Bezuidenhout, converted by flyhalf Jayden Janser.
Windhoek Afrikaans Private School claimed victory in the u11 final, as they beat Parkies 15-3.
Tries by flyhalf Gillmer Horn and flank Niel Louw, along with Horn’s conversion and penalty gave WAP the title. Parkies’ only penalty came from flyhalf Joshua Schaffrath.
