Giving hope to abandoned babies

Rössing Uranium handed over a donation of N$350 000 to the Ruach Elohim Foundation.The donation made towards the coastal-based charity, which operates a Baby Saver Box initiative in Swakopmund, was handed over by Maria Immanuel, the liaison and community development manager of Rössing Uranium, on behalf of the executive director of the company, Uparura Kuvare, who could not attend the occasion.The registered child protection organisation focusing on the awareness and prevention of baby dumping and providing a safe and loving home for abandoned children was started in 2018 by Ronel and Dick Peters. It is a safe haven where women can leave their babies safely and anonymously. A box was subsequently attached to the boundary wall of the foundation where mothers can leave their babies.“Each one of the 14 babies you are currently taking care of represents a story of hope, resilience, and the power of compassion. The tireless efforts of the caretakers and the compassion of you all are commendable,” said Immanuel.She also thanked Ronel and Dick for opening their hearts and home to launch the noble initiative.“In a world where incidents of baby dumping are on the rise, every effort to protect the vulnerable should be supported. Baby dumping is a heartbreaking reality, and the foundation’s dedication to providing a safe haven for these innocent lives speaks volumes. Every baby deserves love, care, and a chance to thrive, and it is through initiatives like the Baby Saver Box that we as the Rössing Foundation can make a tangible difference in their lives.”Ronel thanked Rössing Uranium for the support and for making a “life-saving” difference.“The moment a car stops here to pick up a baby, we cry and cry. In our hearts, we are however happy that these saved babies will have a decent life, that they have found a home, and that they have found forever love.”She explained that some of the donated funds would be used to pay the salary of a private social worker.“Of the total donation, N$240 000 is allocated to enhancing social work expertise within the Ruach Elohim Foundation.“This investment will empower our team to provide comprehensive support and assistance to individuals and families in need across Namibia. A total of N$50 000 will be used to create awareness and for capacity-building initiatives, enabling the Ruach Elohim Foundation to expand its reach and effectiveness in addressing baby dumping. The remaining N$60 000 will be allocated towards providing essential infant formula milk to ensure the well-being and nourishment of the children.”
