Grow as an Intrapreneur
Most people are quite familiar with the idea of what an entrepreneur is. Not so common is the meaning of intrapreneur, which is a more recent term but equally as valid and meaningful.
In its simplest explanation the word intrapreneur describes a way of thinking and behaving similarly to an entrepreneur but instead of working on building their own business the intrapreneur demonstrates the business acumen, solution focused mindset, self-leadership and is eager to help others in the company to reach their true potential.
Most employees in a company can be placed in one of the following categories.
The first type is the disengaged employee. They show up every day, wait out their time, go home at 17:00 and repeat the cycle until they eventually get fired or retired. They have low levels of commitment, low levels of performance and do the bare minimum to scrape by.
The second type is the rule follower. They don’t make trouble, they take no opportunities for growth, they are sticklers for time and duty and take great sense of pride in having done their job just right. This type is very risk-averse but work hard and completes tasks on time. They show no willingness to lead others, to take on more responsibility or grow the company.
The third type is the Questioner. This type seeks ways to do things better but doesn’t always follow through due to a lack of confidence or they run out of steam before realizing their preferred solutions. They have an open mind and are typically willing to learn.
The fourth type is the Problem Solver. This type knows where their time is spent best, they actively solve problems, takes initiative and is open to collaborate and grow.
The fifth and final type is the true intrapreneur. This type has a high level of self-leadership, they are constantly looking at ways to find solutions, they want to grow the company, can work in a team as well as individually and sees it as their responsibility to seek and develop new opportunities for the company and the people.
Take a minute and think which type describes you best. Plot out strategies and seek opportunities for growth to become a true intrapreneur.
