5 ways to ‘unbore’ your office
It’s a busy world and getting busier. We often find that our work-life balance shifts more towards the work side than the having a life side of things. What then happens is we fail at both being productive at work and enjoying our life.
Therefore, it is important to have some steps to help ‘unbore’ your office and get you to enjoy your environment more, become more productive and take the first steps to getting your life back.
Firstly start by adding plants and natural light. Nature doesn’t have anything that’s ninety degrees; yet everything in our workspace has that characteristic. Plants increase oxygen levels in a space, and natural light helps people think with a clear head and focus better.
Personally, I hate being in a dark room as it ends up being a contest of who is going to stay awake the longest, the teacher or the student. Engage in playful activity.
People learn best in moments of enjoyment. We are so overwhelmed by social media, news broadcasts, and life obligations in general that if we aren’t allowed to have some fun then we will become less productive. Consider putting in some tools for play for your employees.
It could be as simple as a tic-tac-toe board, table tennis, anything that gets your employees or yourself to do something different and have some fun.
Furthermore, adding a few personal items to your workspace can make you feel more relaxed. Happy people are productive people. So, don’t be afraid to show off that Batman figurine you bought yourself, or the Minions plush doll or the garden gnome you stole from your neighbour because he was a jerk. If it brings you joy, then consider giving it space in your office.
Humans need to feel that things change. If we don’t have change we get into a rut and productivity suffers for it. It’s why collaboration is so important. Changing things up a bit is good for getting more productive.
I tend to think best when I have something to write with in my hand. Perhaps it’s the tactile sensation or some ancient instinct that makes it feel more real. Use the whiteboards, glass walls, flipcharts, sticky notes on the wall and start getting out of your own head by writing on the walls.
