Sê ‘nee!’ vir waardering

Matteus 6:3: Maar as jy aan die behoeftige gee, moenie jou linkerhand laat weet wat jou regterhand doen nie, sodat jou gee in die geheim kan wees.

Baie Christene haat die woord ‘godsdienstige pligte’. Hulle is teen alle vorme van uiterlike godsdiens wat op die geringste manier wetties kan wees. Baie mense sal soos volg op Matteus 6:1 reageer: ‘Omdat Jesus sê dat ons nie ons godsdienstige pligte in die openbaar moet nakom nie, sal ek liewer niks doen nie.’ Jesus was nie teen godsdienstige pligte nie. Hy het hierdie pligte self uitgevoer soos alle goeie en getroue Jode gedoen het. Ons moet Jesus dus nie verkeerd verstaan nie. Jesus sê nie dat ons nie godsdienstige pligte moet nakom nie. Hy verwag natuurlik van ons om ons geloof te beoefen en geestelike dissiplines is deel daarvan. Die punt wat Jesus maak is dat ons dit nie moet doen om deur mense gesien te word nie. Om die armes te help is elke Christen se roeping. Ons lewe voor God gaan ook oor mense! Wat ons as gelowige mense doen, is ’n saak tussen God en ons! Ons hulp aan die armes is dus iets wat ons vir God en in die teenwoordigheid van God doen. Niemand hoef daarvan te weet nie. Daar is baie arm mense, maar dit moet ons nie keer om ons deel te doen om die nood in ons wêreld te verlig nie. Ons dien God deur die mense van God te dien!

Here, maak vandag my oë oop om hulle te help wat vandag oor my pad kom en hulp nodig het, deur die krag van u Gees. Amen.
