Net Owambo-mense werk hard, sê Utoni

Uitlating laat parlementariërs rooi sien
Die arbeidsminister, wat glo dikwels aanstootlike uitlatings maak, het selfs sy mede-Swapo-parlementslede ontstig.

Brigitte Weidlich – Dinsdag se sitting van die Nasionale Vergadering (NV) het in chaos ontaard nadat Utoni Nujoma, die minister van arbeid, nywerheidsbetrekkinge en werkskepping, aangevoer het dat Owambo-mense hardwerkend is terwyl “die ander lui is”.

Nujoma moes dié uitlatings terugtrek nadat dit ander parlementariërs rooi laat sien het – insluitend dié van sy eie party, Swapo.

Nujoma het ’n Omuwambo-pa - stigterspresident Sam Nujoma - en ’n Omuherero-ma, die voormalige presidentsvrou, Kovambo Nujoma.

Veral opposisiewetgewers het met verontwaardiging gereageer op die uitlatings, wat hulle as stamvooroordeel beskou het.

Onder hulle was die leier van die Landless People’s Movement (LPM) en Nujoma se jarelange aartsvyand, Bernadus Swartbooi, en die party se adjunkhoof, Henny Seibeb.

Die twee mans het hul humeur verloor en gesamentlik en luidkeels hul verontwaardiging op hom losgelaat.

Swartbooi, ’n voormalige adjunkminister van grondhervorming, het Swapo in 2016 verlaat om die LPM te stig ná ’n openbare onderonsie met Nujoma, sy destydse senior minister in dié portefeulje.

Swartbooi het aangebied om te bedank nadat hy geweier het om om verskoning te vra omdat hy gesê het die minister hervestig mense van ander streke in die suide van Namibië ten koste van die inheemse Nama-mense.

President Hage Geingob het Swartbooi beveel om om verskoning te vra, maar die voormalige goewerneur van die ||Kharasstreek het hom teëgesit.

Dinsdag het nie-Oshiwambosprekende Swapo-verteenwoordigers ook aanstoot geneem oor Nujoma se opmerking, wat gemaak is tydens ’n toespraak deur die Popular Democratic Movement (PDM)-leier, McHenry Venaani, wat ’n debat oor beter sanitasiegeriewe vir Namibiërs begin het. Hy het gesê 47% van Namibiese burgers verlig hulself steeds in die oopte.

Nadat die storm losgebars het, het Nujoma opgestaan en gesê wanneer hy ook al na die Noorde – voorheen bekend as Owamboland – reis, sien hy dat die meeste gesinne daar hul eie droë toilette gebou het.

“Maar elders ... wel, die ander is lui,” het die minister gesê en die ander bevolkingsgroepe in die land gekritiseer.

Nadat die Speaker Peter Katjavivi ná minute van chaos ’n mate van orde herstel het, het Nujoma sy opmerking teruggetrek.

AANSTOOTLIK

Die ministerie in die presidensie verantwoordelik vir geslagsgelykheid, armoede-uitwissing en maatskaplike welsyn se adjunkminister, Bernadette Jagger, was een van die Swapo-lede wat die minister geroskam het vir sy uitlatings.

“Ja, hy het daardie stelling teruggetrek, maar daardie stelling was verkeerd! Ek wil dit graag op rekord plaas,” het sy gesê.

Dit gebeur selde dat ’n Swapo-lid, veral ’n adjunkminister, rangorde verbreek en ’n medepartylid in die parlement kritiseer.

Jagger se reaksie het beklemtoon hoe negatief lede van ander stamme op Nujoma se opmerking gereageer het.

Volgens Swartbooi lewer Nujoma dikwels aanstootlike opmerkings in parlementêre sittings. Die minister het toe weer om verskoning gevra.
