Charlene Hartung, a trustee of The Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) board of trustees hailed the 21st anniversary of the entity as a historic celebration.

The NFCPT observed the significant milestone in its quest to continue promoting fish consumption and motivate the public to buy fish for household consumption as well as reselling in their communities in order to derive the nutritious and economic benefits therein.

Ahrtung said the NFCPT fulfills its mandate of promoting fish consumption by making fish accessible, affordable and, most importantly, by teaching people how to prepare and cook fish.

She added that since the NFCPT places strong emphasis on employee development, it invested N$288 188.25 on training and development of its workforce during the 2021/22 financial year. Training and development programs included professional and practical courses, conferences, seminars, and short courses.

She said at the end of March 2021, NFCPT’s total assets stood at N$196 million in comparison to N$161 million for the 2019/20 financial year. However, these figures are expected to grow at the end of March 2022. “Over the years, the trust has been investing in capital projects such as building fish shops. In the 2020/21 financial year, the trust managed to complete the construction of the Omuthiya Fish Shop. Alterations were conducted at Tobias Hainyeko Fish Shop as well as at the head office. We also constructed the Otjiwarongo prefabricated fish shop at an estimated cost of N$27 million. The trust further revamped the Ongwediva Coral Reef Restaurant kitchen which burnt down in 2020. It is now fully operational once again. In addition, the construction of the Ondangwa Fish Shop, which started in June last year, is progressing well and we are hopeful it will be completed in June this year.”

Responding to the Covid-19 pandemic, the trust donated fish and fish products to needy communities and medical equipment and material valued at N$3 million to the Ministry of Health and Social Services. The medical equipment and materials included ICU ventilators, CTG machines, ECG machines, ICU monitors, oxygen flow machines, oxygen cannulas, oxygen concentrators, CPAP masks and non-rebreather masks, blood gas analyzers and ultrasound machines.

To date, through Gala Dinner donations that started 10 years ago, NFCPT and stakeholders have raised over N$5.1 million, which was utilized to assist communities in various regions in the country - particularly with educational needs.
