Nine-time champion Armas set to defend Rössing crown

Nine-time champion and reigning titleholder Alina Armas will return to defend her crown at the Rössing National Marathon next month.One of the race’s most decorated athletes, Armas has built a legacy defined by consistency, resilience and an enduring passion for road running.She made her debut at the event in 2011 in the 10km race, claiming victory in her first two appearances. Two years later, she stepped up to the full 42.2km marathon distance and delivered a breakthrough performance, winning in a commanding time of 2:35:53.She still describes that victory as one of the most joyful milestones of her career and has since gone on to record personal best performances at the event.Rössing’s impactArmas regards the Rössing National Marathon as one of the country’s best-organised road races.“The development bonus awarded to champions makes a real difference. I use it to buy training gear, support my family, and sometimes assist fellow runners who need equipment,” she said.She added that the support has also contributed to her preparations for international competitions, including last year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.“When I travelled to Japan, I bought quality gear with the funds I received from Rössing events,” she said.One of her most cherished memories came in 2016 when she and her husband, Reonard Namupala, both won the national marathon.“That was the best experience for us as a newlywed couple,” she recalled.A passion realisedAlthough running has always been part of her life, Armas admits she never initially envisioned herself as a marathon specialist. Today, the distancehas become her passion.Her message to fellow runners is this: “Road running is not easy. Discipline is key in this career. Consistency and commitment will take you far. Train hard and fight easy.”Armas has confirmed her participation in this year’s edition, scheduled for 7 March, and began her preparations last month.“I am ready to defend my title. I want to wish all runners the very best. Train hard, set your pace, run your race, and most importantly, have fun,” she said.This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Rössing National Marathon, which continues to play a significant role in the development of athletics in the country.The event attracts both elite and recreational runners from across the country and beyond.Winners of the men’s and women’s 42.2km races will each receive N$20 000 in prize money, along with a development bonus voucher valued at N$20 000.– mariud@nsh.com.na
