The art of learning through trading
Developing a generation with financial skills
The Namibia Stock Exchange recently launched the annual Namibian Scholars
Investment Challenge for university students and high school learners.
Students from all over Namibia can take up the challenge to trade a fictitious amount of N$500 000 on the Namibian Stock Exchange (NSX). Registration and the launch of the 2022 Challenge took place on 7 March and the registration will end on 25 March 2022.
“The NSIC 2021 was an exciting year with great returns reaped... We hope to see a positive year in the market, that more teams will participate and will outperform last year’s results,” said Tiaan Bazuin, the CEO of NSX, when inviting the grade 10 to 12 learners and university students.
With not much that is changing this year, the winning team can expect to receive N$50 000 that will be divided between the group members. According to Johene Saal, the information officer at NSX, in the past a percentage of the prize went to the winning team’s school but this year an extra amount of N$10 000 is added to the prize money for the school. The top five teams will all be receiving a cash prize.
In an effort to educate and inform the Namibian community on financial education, the Financial Literacy Initiative (FLI) has been a partner of the NSIC for years. Old Mutual is entering its third year of partnership with the NSX for the competition, sponsoring N$600 000 over a period of three years.
“Our investment of N$200 000 is intended to plant a seed that will help our youth discover their talent before their prime,” said Ashante Mannetti, the Old Mutual acting marketing and communications executive.
The Namibian Scholars Investment Challenge started in 1998 with the main aim of introducing secondary school and university students to share investments and provide them with knowledge of capital marketing operations, shared Bazuin. Bazuin added that the competition intends to make the public more aware of the workings of the Namibian Capital Market.
